When Alessa (FMC) returns to her apartment after leaving her cheating boyfriend, she quite literally bumps into Julien and is instantly smitten. Maybe it’s his looks (which are frankly illegal), or maybe it’s that he’s the exact opposite of the man she just left behind. What she doesn’t know is that this “chance” meeting was no accident. Julien (MMC) orchestrated it for reasons that are… let’s say less than romantic. What he didn’t plan on was wanting Alessa in ways that complicate everything. She was supposed to be a means to an end, but even monsters can lose the plot when it comes to the right woman.
The world Alex N. Rose builds around these two is tight, vivid, and consistent. Every choice, every reveal, feels intentional. I know this all sounds wildly vague, but I refuse to spoil the good bits, and trust me, some of the moments I want to scream about would give away far too much.
The character dynamics are smooth and emotionally rich. You can feel the joy, the pain, the fear, and the determination with every interaction. There are sad moments, not sob-on-the-floor sad, but enough to sting… and more than enough to tease that another book is coming for one of the minor characters. I’m already sharpening my anticipation.
There is spice, serious spice, but it’s balanced. It doesn’t feel thrown in for shock or quota. It flows naturally with the tension between these two, building as their connection deepens and their choices become messier.
This novella is fast-paced, high-action, and engaging from the first page to the last. If you’re in the mood for something quick, chaotic, and a little murderous, with a side of scorching romance, this one is for you.
