If you’ve ever wondered how to survive grief in the most interesting way possible, alongside two men who are already boyfriends, To Burn in Their Flames might be exactly what you’re looking for.

After losing her brother, Iris spirals into self-medication and emotional numbness until her parents push her into rehab. While she expects the program to change her life, she doesn’t realize just how deeply things will shift when she meets Rory. Their connection is intense, grounding, and formative, but temporary. When Iris leaves rehab, she also leaves Rory behind, believing it’s the right choice for both of them.

What she doesn’t realize is how deeply their lives have already intertwined.

Needing space from home and her grief, Iris finds herself drawn into the music scene, where she meets Faolán while he’s playing at a bar. What Iris doesn’t know, poor soul, is that Faolán is Rory’s partner. From there, Iris is pulled into a story that is emotionally charged, messy in the best way, and full of unexpected connections that refuse to stay buried.

This novel is visually rich in a way that feels intentional rather than ornamental. Every building, bar, and plane ride serves the story instead of interrupting it. The setting work pulls you fully into Iris’s world, making each location feel lived-in and emotionally grounded.

The spice is equally well done. It’s not inserted for shock value or heat alone; it grows naturally out of the relationships between Iris, Rory, and Faolán. That said, if on-page intimacy between the two MMCs isn’t something you enjoy, this may not be the book for you. If it is, consider this a very enthusiastic recommendation. Read it. Immediately.

Alex N. Rose has created a beautiful, emotionally layered world here, building on the foundation laid in To Love the Reaper. This continuation feels natural and deeply satisfying, and rumor has it there may be more to come. If we do get Rory and Faolán’s story, I will be seated and emotionally unprepared.

Alex N. Rose has officially become one of my favorite indie authors, and if you’re drawn to stories that explore grief, desire, and unconventional love with care and intensity, I think you’ll love her work too. If my To Burn in Their Flame book review by Alex N. Rose has caught you attention, you might enjoy all her other work.
