The Newcomer Goes Forth

Remi’s first trip to the vet didn’t begin with trembling or panic.
Instead, she curled quietly in the backseat of the SUV, paws tucked beneath her, eyes soft but observant. A small body holding very big questions.
This was her first journey beyond home since officially joining us. New smells, unfamiliar sounds, a destination she couldn’t possibly understand. The world outside the window passed by in blurred shapes, and she watched it all with the solemn curiosity of someone learning what safety feels like in motion.
There’s a moment in new beginnings that feels like this.
Not fear, exactly, but awareness. The understanding that something important is happening, even if you don’t know the name for it yet.
She didn’t fuss. She didn’t pace. She simply rested there, trusting that wherever we were going, she wasn’t going alone.
Later, there would be treats. Gentle hands. Reassurance. The slow layering of routines that turn strange places into familiar ones. But this moment, stretched out in the backseat, felt like the true beginning. A quiet crossing. A small act of bravery.
The newcomer goes forth.
Not boldly.
But willingly.
