Opening Letter
The days begin to shorten. The evenings linger a little longer. We reach for stories that ask us to wander deeper into forgotten woods, hidden libraries, and places where curiosity is rewarded just as often as it’s punished.
This month’s motivation was a reminder that growth doesn’t always arrive in bright sunlight. Sometimes it waits in the shadows, asking only that we keep moving forward one careful step at a time.
Words to Carry With You
Every Saturday this month offered a different reminder. Some were a little sarcastic. Some a little feral. All of them were invitations to keep going.
- “You looked into the dark long enough to discover it had something to offer.”
Not everything waiting in the shadows is meant to be feared. - “Be careful what you learn to hunger for. Some appetites sharpen when fed.”
Ambition, desire, and the things that grow stronger once you begin giving them your attention. - “Some things in the dark don’t chase you. They wait for you to recognize yourself.”
Self-recognition, hidden strength, and discovering the parts of yourself that have been waiting beneath the surface. - “Once you stop fearing the dark, you start noticing which doors only open there.”
The final August Shadow Sermon is about curiosity, courage, and discovering opportunities that only appear once you’re willing to enter unfamiliar territory.
Rituals Worth Keeping
Self-care isn’t always bubble baths and candles. Sometimes it’s closing the laptop. Sometimes it’s making tea before answering another email. These were this month’s quiet rituals.
- “Pay attention to what keeps asking to be fed. Neglect has a voice too.”
Care begins with paying attention to what keeps asking for nourishment. - “Not every hunger deserves feeding. Learn the difference before something grows teeth.”
Attention is nourishment, and what you repeatedly feed has a way of growing. - “You are allowed to keep parts of yourself where no one else can reach them.”
Protect your inner life, preserve what belongs to you, and stop treating access as something everyone deserves. - “You’ve spent enough time trimming your edges for people who were going to call you strange anyway.” Stop making yourself small, keep your edges
- “Sit quietly with yourself long enough, and eventually something honest answers.”
Solitude, self-reflection, and becoming comfortable with what you discover when the noise finally disappears.
Begin Again
Mondays have a reputation for demanding too much. Around here, they’re simply another chance to begin again.
- “Pay attention to what keeps pulling you back. Some obsessions are directions.”
Sometimes what keeps calling you back is pointing toward where you should go next. - “Want something badly enough to become dangerous to every excuse standing in the way.”
Becoming more committed to what you want than to the excuses keeping you from pursuing it. - “If you keep returning to the same darkness, eventually you should come back changed.”
Allowing the things that deeply matter to you to change how you move through the world. - “You’ve followed the same shadow this far. Stop pretending you don’t know where you’re going.”
Trusting your choices and recognizing when uncertainty has become an excuse to avoid claiming the path you already chose. - “You found the door. You heard something move behind it. Open it anyway.”
Courage, curiosity, and choosing to move forward even when you cannot see exactly what waits on the other side
One Last Thought
Every month leaves something behind. Maybe it was one quote that lingered longer than expected. Maybe one Sunday reminder finally found the right moment. Whatever followed you through this collection, I hope it stays with you a little longer.
